SEPTEMBER 14th - 17th, 2016
The trip will begin by exploring Mexico City on the 15th and experiencing the ´Independence Day Grito´ from the 7th floor patio of the hotel during the evening. Arriving early the next morning at Xochimilco, just south of metropolitan Mexico City, be prepared to enter another world. Crossing the locks, another world opens before you, bringing you closer to nature with a variety of birds and lush vegetation, as well as passing by working farms with domestic crops and animals. The destination floating through these channels of water, whose origins date to pre- Hispanic times, is the Island of the Dolls, a unique photographic and emotional experience. there will be plenty to photograph, as well as photographic challenges. Jo will be available to help you with any problems that you might have. A picnic lunch is provided on the launch, and the return trip is made in the afternoon light. SAN MIGUEL ARCHANGEL
OCTOBER 28TH - NOVEMBER 3rd, 2016

The locals go all out to celebrate their patron saint San Miguel Archangel. The festivities include a variety of events, all outstanding photographic opportunities. Groups carry suchiles, large floral arches made of cactus and flowers and place them in front of La Parroquia. The Alborada, the largest fireworks display of the year consists of unique fireworks, beautiful, creative towers called castillos. Once lit, flowers, crosses, and animals momentarily light the night sky. Some twirl, some break away from the towers, streaming colors as they fly through the air. Besides the fireworks, the Voladores de Papantla set up their tower in the Jardin, the main plaza. In colorful costumes, they hang upside down and twirl to the ground in this ancient traditional ceremony. Mojigangas, larger than life-sized puppets, dance and sway. There are two lively parades with conchero dancers, making their own music with shells on their ankles. They wear elaborately beaded costumes, masks and feathered headdresses. Regional dancers and floats parade in the streets.

What a spectacle of photographic opportunities! How to capture compelling images amid all the action? Let Jo Brenzo you. She has lived in San Miguel for twenty years and knows how to find the best locations for taking your photos, as well as provide you with tips on how to deal with moving subjects, jostling crowds, and shooting in low light conditions.
Classroom time will be scheduled around the various events so that Jo can cover technical camera issues as needed. Participants should arrive with a working familiarity of their cameras. Before each shoot, Jo will discuss the potential and pitfalls of photographing for each particular event.
Review: After the events and you´ve taken all of your photos, each participant will receive an individual session with Jo. At this time you and Jo will review all images and select those you want to contribute to the group slide presentation.
