During this two-day workshop, printmaker Gary Berkowitz will guide you through some fun and practical exercises in alternative printmaking. Gary provides an intensive, creative environment, introducing participants to some of the many possibilities for the artist using printing as one of the rich expressions in modern art. This is a hands-on workshop grounded in technique, which gives control and frees you (the artist) to create work using your own personal vision. EXPRESSIVE DRAWING
This is a class for both beginners and painters who feel the need for a more solid grounding in drawing fundamentals. Beginning and intermediate artists learn to see and draw both accurately and expressively, with the emphasis on expressiveness. Students learn alternate and complementary methods of drawing - contour, simplification of shapes, and gesture, which involve simply the control of line, form and action. The materials needed are simple: charcoal, soft pencils, eraser and sketch pad (about 11”x16”). The human figure is the basis of the class, although we draw other subjects as well. Model fees are included in the class fee. Each class is paid for individually.

PAINTING AND DRAWING CLASSES
Study painting and drawing techniques with Keith Keller at “La Escuela,” School of Drawing and Painting. Students will receive individual instruction and daily access to a large, well-lit studio. There are courses for both beginners and experienced painters. Most beginning students are ready to paint simple subjects within a few days. Traditional painting versus modern techniques are discussed and put into practice. Experienced painters are free to just paint. EXPERIMENTAL PAINTING WITH INK, WATERCOLOR, COLLAGE AND ACRYLIC
Britt Zaist creates rich, colorful ink abstractions. She teaches the process in this hands-on two-day workshop, which will leave you wanting to go home and make your own creations. Besides demonstrating permanent ink applications, she illustrates the use of acrylic, watercolor and collage. On the first day there will be a discussion of materials, technique, theory, and composition. A demonstration follows ending with each student working with the materials to create five paintings. The second day will consist of a discussion about the work created and the use of finishing techniques. Students will have the class artwork as well as printed class notes to be able to work on their own.

ART-MAKING USING FABRIC AND COLLAGE

Classes in art-making using various materials… I am offering 3 kinds of workshops:  create your own clothing, fabric collage, and paper mache using natural materials, fabric etc.  Try all 3 or just choose one.

In creating your own skirt, t-shirt or dress, you will start with something you own that you almost love, and we will redesign it using my boxes of extra materials, or your own… Pants can become skirts, a dress can become a skirt, a tiny skirt can be added to, in order to make a collaged clothing piece…T-shirts can be changed to be more stylish , changing the sleeves, neckline, adding ruffles, etc… So we will cut and pin and fit, and a professional seamstress will sew it for you, and it will be ready to wear.

Or, we can do collage, using various papers and fabrics, bring your own, collect them in san miguel or use some of mine… We will use paper or board as a base, and create a unique collage.

Paper mache is a wonderful art form, using only newspaper, paste , wire and cardboard.  Inexpensive to construct and unlimited in possibilities, I like to keep to natural materials, including fabric, of course, to create figures, animals, or even abstract pieces…

GUM TRANSFER PRINTING
Learn an easy way to create fine art work from all those drawings in your journal or sketchpad. Go ahead and put all those scribbles into an archival media. Take this one-day workshop that will be highly gratifying and cost effective. There should be time to produce at least two copies of three different drawings. Learn a Plano-graphic process without having to grind or etch a stone. From a photocopy, you will make a gum print that looks like a lithograph. You will be producing fine work from the first day. CERAMICS STUDIO:
INDIVIDUAL CLASSES, FAMILY WORKSHOPS, SPACE FOR RENT

Looking for the perfect art space in which to create and be inspired? Local, 10yr resident, MFA ceramic artist Joan Elena Goldberg opens her 3rd floor, sunlit studio in Centro to motivated beginners and working artists. Put your hands into San Miguel’s local, luscious red earthenware clay and find out for yourself why everyone who does says it’s the best therapy they’ve had in years.

**Students will learn various hand building and decorating techniques including: slab construction, coil building, utilizing molds for shaping and slumping, painting with colored clays (engobes), sgrafitto, carving, burnishing and adding metal embellishments. Joan Elena will help guide you through your design objectives using examples from books, her personal art gallery, and thought-provoking visualizations. She will also make fun all the technical aspects of engineering a successful ceramic sculpture, and demonstrate why working in clay can make you feel grounded and safe = Zen.
***Artists with experience are welcome to share studio space/all materials & equipment for a few days, a few months, or ? All proposals considered. Electric wheel available for private use. No production pottery.

PAPÍER MÂCHÉ WORKSHOP
Have a unique San Miguel cultural/learning experience in the puppet and mask-filled studio of Lisa Simms. Whether you are a child or an adult, I encourage creativity, self-expression and good fun as well as learning solid sculpture techniques in papíer mâché and mixed media. All levels are welcome – teenagers, well-mannered children, and adults including the experienced artist/executive who needs to lighten-up and expand artistic boundaries. Students can create figures, sculptures, masks, puppets (even giant ones!). Time and luggage space are your only limitations. Students can complete one project in a two-day workshop, or study longer to create more advanced-level projects. Lisa is also available for custom group workshops, where friends/family members have a chance to relate to one another in a creative, non-threatening environment. Create your own “world in a container” using Mexican nichos—tin boxes with glass doors--in this fun workshop. Wander your inner landscape; express your soul’s images with an assemblage of found objects, collage, milagros, and miniatures. Learn about painting on tin, glues, and how to make a strong composition . All materials are provided; you will have access to an extensive collection of decorative craft  materials.  Great experience for teenagers and family reunions.

SCULLPTURE CLASSES FOR ADULTS (ALL LEVELS WELCOME)

Take this opportunity to study sculpture in small classes with Rita Torlen, a long time resident of San Miguel. She has exhibited extensively in the United States, Canada and Mexico. Rita holds a Masters of Fine Arts in Sculpture from the San Francisco Art Institute.

These classes are great fun and you will be amazed as your creative VISION plays itself out before you. You will accomplish your artistic goals due to the high level of instruction. No previous art instruction is required but even experienced artists will find new ways to express themselves.

Both abstract and figurative sculpture is encouraged. Faux finish and coloration instruction is provided for fired clay pieces. Bronze casting is provided by a full service Mexican Foundry offering reasonable casting prices. Pieces are returned with a full finish, patina and bases. Due to drying time, two weeks of instruction (6 classes, 18 hours) is encouraged but a lot can be accomplished with less time. Materials for wax or clay plus tools are provided.
